Greenwood Rural VFD - Parker County, Texas

Adopt A County Road Program

Seven years ago, the firefighters and auxiliary members of Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department answered an article in a local newspaper asking for help with roadside clean up.  The Parker County, “Adopt A County Road” program was seeking help from businesses, churches, organizations, and individuals to pick up a two mile stretch of roadway in their area of the county.  Those who signed up were required to keep their assigned two mile stretch clean, and to commit to a six times a year clean up.  In return for their commitment, a road sign was placed at the beginning and ending of every two miles to let the  community know who was responsible for keeping that particular stretch of county roadway clean.

So when Greenwood saw the opportunity to serve their community in a non-firefighting way, and to keep their roadway clean, they became participants in the program.  The fire department has challenged others throughout Parker County to join the Parker County Adopt A County Road program.  It is a way to keep the trash that others so thoughtlessly throw out cleaned up, and to keep Greenwood’s assigned two miles, Greenwood Road from Ranger Hwy to Greenwood Cut-Off Road, looking its best.

The next time you see a group of people walking down Greenwood Road with trash bags in hand, picking up trash, give them a “honk”.  It is most likely the gang from Greenwood doing what they do best, giving of themselves to help their community.   Additional information regarding this program can be obtained from Nancy Burgoyne, 817-371-9358.
