Chief’s Letter to Firefighter Candidates
Dear Greenwood Firefighter Candidate,
Before you fill out the application to become a member of the Greenwood Rural VFD, there are a few items to consider.
When you become a volunteer firefighter, you are making a commitment to your fellow firefighters, to our department and to the citizens of our fire district. To help you assess whether you are willing to make that commitment, you should ask yourself the following:
- Am I willing to attend all the departments training sessions and business meetings? (Two nights a month, or a commitment of 6-7 hrs per month.)
- Am I willing to respond to all fire calls when I am available? (We average about 30 calls each month)
- Am I willing to respond to fire calls that occur at difficult hours? (Fire calls and motor vehicle accidents often happen at inopportune times, such as 2:00 am.)
- Am I willing to donate my time for other areas of the department such as, fundraising, work parties, washing trucks, or whatever other duties are required? (These activities are essential to our success.)
- Does my spouse understand the commitment of hours I am about to make, and does he/she approve of my decision? (Without your spouses support, you will not be a successful firefighter.)
- Will the department and my fellow firefighters be able to depend on me to become a valuable member of the Greenwood team?
If you have answered “yes,” please go to the Greenwood Application Page and download the document. If you have answered “no” to any of these questions or have any doubts, you might want to reconsider applying. Even though our department is all-volunteer, we provide an essential service to our community. Our department depends on its members to respond to all emergencies if at all possible. Without a strong commitment by each member, our team, our department, will fail.
